Nexus Prime battery life and processor worries

By: Alan Ng | September 30, 2011

If you have already decided that the Samsung Nexus Prime is the next smartphone for you, there is little doubt that you’ll be tuning into Samsung and Google’s upcoming Mobile Unpacked event that has now been confirmed to be taking place on October 11.
One thing that is still up for debate though is the type of processor that will be included in the device, as although it has been heavily rumored to include a dual-core 1.5ghz processor, the brand of this processor is yet to be determined, and could make a vital difference in terms of overall performance. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

Google+ hints at communal media sharing in Hangouts

Thursday September 29, 2011,

In the early days of the Google+ beta project, plenty of users were excited to see how cleanly images could be shared across their streams. Some of the more popular G+ users (according to how many people have actually circled them, anyway) have actually used animated imagery on the platform to draw attention to more thought-provoking posts.
Myspace Founder Tom Anderson, for example, has definitely been known to share a few posts containing animated GIFs, while other users (the formerly skeptical Robert Scoble included) adopted the trend shortly afterward. Although sharing on Google+ is twice as more likely to be private and among chosen circles, media sharing in general on the platform has been popular as there is no shortage of photos, videos and, yes, more animated GIFs to sift through on the fledgling social network. Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0: User Interface disappointing after video preview?

By: Alan Ng | September 29, 2011

Considering that Google has already confirmed Ice Cream Sandwich for a release sometime in October or November, we have heard very little details on Google’s next mobile operating system since, until now that is. A video discovered online is currently doing the rounds and appears to give a complete walkthrough of the new interface and what it can do.
The authenticity of the video is certainly up for debate though, as the origin of the clip has been located to none other than your favorite online marketplace Ebay, and the anonymous buyer who reported his findings to Engadget. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

iPhone 5 more in demand than Nexus Prime – Reality or Fabrication?

By: Alan Ng | September 29, 2011

As Android and iOS fans gear up for arguably the biggest smartphone launches to date in relation to the iPhone 5 and the still unannounced Nexus Prime, a recent study has concluded that demand for Apple’s device is far great than that for Google’s upcoming phone.
The study has been conducted by mobile ad network InMobi and it reveals that the iPhone 5 is far more desirable than devices from Google and RIM’s Blackberry smartphones, as reported from AppleInsider. Consumers were surveyed from the US, Canada and Europe and although the stats suggest that Apple’s devices are leading the way in terms of consumer demand, it remains to be seen whether these stats really reflect on public opinion. Google Warms to Solar Energy With $75M Investment

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Sept. 27 plunked down $75 million to provide solar panels on residential roofs for up to 3,000 homeowners, marking the company's second investment in solar energy for homes.

Google will seed partner Clean Power Finance with money to contract with third-party installers, such as American Vision Solar, SunLogic and California Solar Systems, to put solar panels into homes.
Solar installers contract with Clean Power Finance to access consumer financing from investors, such as Google. The installer builds the system, which is owned by the investor (Google, for this instance).

Homeowners then make monthly payments for the system, often for less than that of traditional, electric-powered energy. Clean Power Finance will bill consumers and maintain the solar panels.
As a company that employs dozens of data centers and hundreds of thousands of server computers to fuel Web searches and cloud-based applications all over the world, Google is particularly sensitive to its energy consumption and carbon footprint. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: eWEEK

Google Nexus S tethering problems fixed with Android 2.3.6

By: Peter Chubb | September 28, 2011

The release of the Samsung Nexus Prime is fast approaching, but that does not mean to say that support for the Nexus S has stopped. The handset has been suffering with tethering problems, so you will be pleased to know that this issue has been fixed with Android 2.3.6, yet another incarnation of Gingerbread.
What we love about this handset is how you do not have to wait for the update, as it is an OTA and comes direct from Google. The reason for this is due to the fact that it is a stock device, so does not require a third-party UI, which is the biggest reason for OS update delays – hence the reason for the delay of the HTC ThunderBolt. The update was made available to Nexus S customers yesterday. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

Google makes key move into London's Tech City

Google has shown its commitment to East London's Tech City by signing a long-term lease for a seven story building where it plans to provide a launchpad for London-based start-ups.
Often referred to as 'silicon roundabout' London's Tech City is being billed as the UK's hub for tech and digital start-ups.
Google has long insisted that it is supportive of the scheme, and it has now backed that up with a financial commitment which will include a full refurbishment of the building ahead of a 2012 launch. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: TechRadar

Google Drive possibilities: Android/Chrome integration

By: Peter Chubb | September 27, 2011

One has to wonder that now we are slowly moving more of our technology over to cloud storage that hard drives will begin to reduce in size one again? We are not there yet, but why would you want a 1TB hard drive in your computer, when you will be saving more of your content online? Google Drive is a fine example of this, which to some looks likes a re-branded version of Google Docs
The future of the new service could end up being a bigger deal than Dropbox, simply because of the integration possibilities with Android and Chrome, well that’s according to TIME. There had been rumors that the new service should have already been launched, but was delayed to coincide with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich. There is certainly some merit to this, as Apple will be offering iOS users their new cloud storage service very soon, so makes sense for Google to do the same. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

Google+ sees traffic and users climb

By: Gary Johnson | September 27, 2011
It’s only been a week since the once invitation only Google+, finally opened up to all comers to experience and enjoy the relativity new social network. The move has certainly worked as Google+ sees traffic and user numbers climb nicely.
According to Digital Trends the sites traffic jumped a massive 1,269%, which gave it a spot in the top ten social networking sites. It may still be behind the likes of MySpace and Facebook, but new data from Experian Hitwise shows a lot of new users giving Google+ a try. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

Google+ celebrates 50 million users with CityVille addition

27 September 2011 10:20 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Since opening up invite-free to the public, it's been Google+ mania. You can't walk down the street without hearing someone exclaiming their joy that yet another social network has entered their life. Or something like that.
Whether its cultural impact is on a par with other social platforms is debatable at the moment, but as Pocket-lint's teacher said the day we were relieved of our milk money collecting duties - "the figures don't lie".
And the figures are big: 50 million big according to Paul Allen, who has been tracking Google+ users from day one.
"Since being opened to the general public (over age 18) last week, Google+ has been growing by at least 4 per cent per day, meaning that around 2 million new users have been signing up each day," he wrote, on Google+ of course. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: PocketLint

Inexpensive iPhone 4S price point

By: Peter Chubb | September 23, 2011

We are still no closer at figuring out Apple’s plans when it comes to their new handset, but the idea of an inexpensive iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 is an interesting one. We cannot be certain of recent rumors, but let’s say for one moment that they are, then one has to wonder what would be the correct price point for the iPhone 4S to break the stranglehold that Google Android has on the lower-end phone market?
As you may already know Apple could do three things, release an improved version of the iPhone 4 (the 4S) announce a new version (iPhone 5) or even do both. It could go any way, which we should find out once Tim Cook takes to the stage to deliver his keynote in just under two weeks time. The smart thing to do would be to do both, as it is so important for Apple to break into the market where people cannot afford high-end prices. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: ProductReviews

Google wins legal fight with Australian regulator over Sponsored Links

Thursday September 22, 2011, Matt Brian

In an announcement by the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Google has won a legal fight where it was accused by the Australian regulator of misleading customers by failing to adequately distinguish between advertisements and organic search results.
The case, which first began in March 2010, argued that Google played a part in the publication of advertisements on its search pages, where the headline, description and link didn’t actually represent the company placing the ad, suggesting that not only was the advertiser engaging in false advertising and deceptive conduct, Google was also. Google+ opens doors, Facebook introduces more changes

    Darren Allan
    Darren Allan -

We’re sure it’s mere coincidence, of course, but Facebook has just implemented some more changes after Google+ has opened its doors to the public.
Google+, the search giant’s social network, officially went into open beta yesterday afternoon, so now anyone can sign up without an invite. There’s a doodle on the search home page this morning, too, to make sure no visitors miss this fact.
And even if Google+ has a huge mountain to climb in terms of catching up to Facebook’s 750 million plus users, Mark Zuckerberg isn’t taking the potential threat anything less than seriously. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: TechWatch

Google+ opened up to all, Hangouts go mobile

Google has announced that it has opened up Google+ sign-ups to all, bringing the service out of its invite-only shell.
Not only has it made the service available to everybody, it has also announced it is bringing one of its more impressive features to mobile phones – Hangouts.
Hangouts is the group chat service which is direct competition with the likes of Skype and, to a lesser degree, Facebook. READ THE FULL ARTICLE + VIDEO: TechRadar

Dwindling Google Plus activity: User abandonment?

    By: Peter Chubb

When Google+ aka Plus was first launched it was only open to a select few, then once others were allowed to join we had an unlimited number of invites to share. Now it seems that there is only a limited number of invites left (I have 150) and it is this that could spell disaster for the new project, as this has now had an effect on growth. Over the past few weeks we have noticed dwindling activity, which points to user abandonment.
When Google+ was first launched it was seen as something new and fresh, which is why it took no time to achieve 20 million users. The main reason was how slick it all was, and the fact that it had much more features to offer when compared to Facebook. However, it did not take long for the number one social network to implement some of these new features themselves. READ THE FULL ARTICLE: Product-Reviews
